Why You Should Update

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has advised all driving licence holders to keep their mobile numbers current on the Sarathi portal. An outdated number causes real problems:

OTP failures

Most DL services on the Sarathi portal require OTP verification. If your registered number is inactive, you cannot complete renewals, transfers, or address changes online.

Missed e-challan alerts

Traffic violation notices and fine reminders are sent via SMS to your registered number. An old number means you may not know about pending challans until they pile up.

Renewal and expiry reminders

The transport department sends SMS alerts before your DL expires. Missing these reminders can lead to driving with an expired licence.

Insurance and verification delays

Insurance companies and verification services may use the mobile number linked to your DL for authentication. A mismatch can slow down claims.

What You Need

This is one of the simplest updates you can make. You only need three things:

Your driving licence number
Your date of birth (as recorded on the DL)
Aadhaar number (for OTP-based verification)

Aadhaar must be linked. The OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number for verification. If your Aadhaar itself has an outdated number, update it at an Aadhaar centre first before proceeding with the DL update.

How to Update Online

You can update your mobile number directly on the Sarathi portal. The process takes just a few minutes and does not require an RTO visit.

1

Go to the Sarathi portal

Visit sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your state. Alternatively, use the direct mobile update link available on the portal homepage.

2

Open the mobile number update page

Look for "Update Mobile Number" under Driving Licence services. Some states list it under "Apply Online" or on the portal sidebar.

3

Enter your DL details

Type in your driving licence number and date of birth. The portal will fetch your existing records.

4

Verify via Aadhaar OTP

Enter your Aadhaar number. An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Enter the OTP to verify your identity.

5

Enter your new mobile number

Type in the new mobile number you want to link. Confirm it and submit. You will receive an SMS confirmation on the new number.

Update your RC too. If you also own a vehicle, update your mobile number on the Vahan portal as well. The Vahan and Sarathi databases are separate, so updating one does not automatically update the other.
