Quick Info

Portal

echallan.parivahan.gov.in

You Need

Vehicle, DL, or challan number

Also On

mParivahan app

What You Need

Checking a challan is free and does not require registration. You only need one of the following, plus the mobile number linked to your vehicle in case an OTP is requested:

  • Vehicle registration number, the easiest option if you do not have the SMS.
  • Challan number, printed in the challan SMS or notice.
  • Driving licence number, useful to see challans tied to your licence.

How to Check on the Portal

All genuine challans are recorded on the central portal run by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This is the safe place to check.

1

Open the official portal

Go to echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Type the address yourself rather than tapping a link in any SMS.

2

Choose "Check Challan Status"

Select this option from the menu on the home page.

3

Pick how to search

Choose challan number, vehicle number, or DL number, then enter the detail and the captcha. You may also be asked for the chassis or engine number.

4

Verify with OTP if asked

For some searches the portal sends an OTP to the registered mobile number. Enter it to continue.

5

View your challans

The portal lists every challan against your vehicle or licence, with the violation, date, location, amount, and status.

Check on the official site only. Scammers send fake challan SMS with payment links. The genuine portal address ends in .gov.in. Never check or pay through a link sent to you.

Reading the Result

Each challan shows a status that tells you what to do next. The three you will see most often are:

Pending

Unpaid. You can pay it online right away.

Paid

Cleared. Keep the receipt for your records.

Sent to Court

Online window closed. Settle via Virtual Court.

If a challan is pending, you can clear it in a few minutes. See our guide on how to check and pay an e-challan. If the challan looks wrong, do not pay it. You can dispute a wrong e-challan for free instead.

Check via the mParivahan App

If you prefer your phone, the official mParivahan app shows the same records. Install it from your app store, then use the challan or vehicle search to view pending challans. The app also stores your digital driving licence and RC, so it is handy to keep installed even when you are not checking a fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I check a challan without the challan number?
Yes. Search by your vehicle registration number instead. You only need any one of three things: vehicle number, challan number, or driving licence number.
Is there any fee to check my challan status?
No. Checking is completely free and does not require an account. You only pay when you choose to clear a pending challan.
How soon does a challan appear after the violation?
Camera-based challans usually appear within a few days of the violation, around the same time the SMS alert is sent. If you were stopped in person, it may show almost immediately.
My challan does not show up. What does that mean?
It may not have been generated yet, or you entered the details incorrectly. Double-check the vehicle number and try again after a day or two. If an SMS asks you to pay but nothing shows on the official portal, treat the message as a likely scam.
