What You Need to Track Your Application

Before you start, keep these details handy:

For Tracking a New Application

Application number (from your acknowledgement slip)
Date of birth (as entered during application)

For Tracking Dispatch

Speed Post tracking number (shown on the portal after dispatch)

Lost your application number? Check the SMS sent to your registered mobile number at the time of application, or look for it in the fee payment receipt.

Check Application Status on the Sarathi Portal

This is the most common method. It works for all application types including new LL, permanent DL, renewal, duplicate, and international driving permit. The portal is available 24/7.

1

Go to the Sarathi portal

Visit sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your state from the dropdown.

2

Click on "Application Status"

Find this on the dashboard, usually near the top or under the "Driving Licence" menu.

3

Enter your details

Type in your application number and date of birth exactly as they appear on your acknowledgement slip. Fill in the captcha code.

4

Click "Submit"

The portal will display the current stage of your application and any pending actions from your end or the RTO.

Status Stages Explained

Your application moves through several stages from submission to delivery. Here is what each status means:

Status What It Means Typical Duration
Submitted Application and fee payment received. Immediate
Under Verification RTO is reviewing your documents. 1 to 5 working days
Approved Test passed and licence approved for issue. 1 to 3 days after test
Printing in Progress Smart card is being printed. 3 to 10 working days
Dispatched Card handed to India Post for Speed Post delivery. 3 to 10 days for delivery
Delivered Smart card delivered to your registered address. -

Stuck on "Printing in Progress"? This is usually due to RTO backlog or printer downtime. Wait 5 to 10 working days before contacting the RTO. Your digital DL on DigiLocker or mParivahan is legally valid in the meantime.

Track DL Dispatch via Speed Post

Once your status changes to "Dispatched", a Speed Post consignment number is generated. You can use this to track the physical delivery of your smart card.

1

Get the tracking number

Check the "Application Status" page on the Sarathi portal. If dispatched, the Speed Post tracking number will appear alongside the dispatch date. Some states also send it via SMS.

2

Track on India Post

Go to indiapost.gov.in, click "Track Consignment", enter the tracking number, and check delivery status.

3 to 10 Days

Typical delivery time in cities and towns after dispatch.

10 to 20 Days

Delivery to remote or rural areas may take longer.

12 to 24 Hours

Wait before the tracking number starts showing updates on India Post.

No tracking number showing? Some RTOs do not upload the tracking number to the portal. In this case, wait for delivery or contact the RTO enquiry counter with your application number.

Other Ways to Check

Besides the Sarathi portal, you can check your DL status or access your digital licence through these methods:

mParivahan app

Enter your DL number and DOB to view licence details and validity. You can also add it as a virtual DL on your phone.

DigiLocker

Search for "Driving Licence" under issued documents, fetch it using your DL number and DOB. Legally valid as a digital document.

Visit the RTO

Go to the RTO enquiry counter with your application number and a valid ID proof to check status in person.

Digital DL is legally valid. A MoRTH circular confirms that documents shown through DigiLocker or mParivahan are recognised at par with original physical documents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I track a Learner's Licence application the same way?
Yes. The "Application Status" feature on the Sarathi portal works for all application types including LL, permanent DL, renewal, duplicate, and international driving permit.
How long does it take to receive the physical DL after passing the test?
The typical timeline is 2 to 4 weeks. This includes data entry (1 to 3 days), printing (3 to 10 days), and postal delivery (3 to 10 days). Remote areas or backlogs may take longer.
My status is not showing on the portal. What should I do?
Double-check your application number and date of birth. Try again after a few hours or use a different browser. If it still does not appear after 48 hours, visit your RTO enquiry counter with your acknowledgement slip.
Can I drive using the digital DL while waiting for the physical card?
Yes. The digital DL available on DigiLocker and mParivahan is legally recognised across India and can be shown to traffic police during a check.
