Two Tests, Two Separate Bookings

Getting a driving licence in India involves two tests, and each requires its own slot booking on the Sarathi Parivahan portal. Without a confirmed slot, you cannot appear for either test.

LL Test (Learner's Licence)

Computer-based test on traffic rules and road signs. Some states offer this online from home via Aadhaar authentication.

Format 20 MCQs, need 12 to pass
Requires LL application + fee paid

DL Test (Driving Licence)

Practical driving test at the RTO. You need to bring your own vehicle or one from a driving school.

Format On-road or track driving
Requires LL held for 30+ days

How to Book Your Slot

The booking process is the same for both LL and DL slots. The only difference is the option you select under the Appointments menu.

1

Go to the Sarathi portal

Visit sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select your state from the dropdown.

2

Open Appointments

Click "Appointments" in the top navigation and select "LL Slot Booking" or "DL Slot Booking" depending on your test.

3

Enter your details

Type in your application number and date of birth. Fill in the captcha and click Submit.

4

Select RTO, date, and time

Choose your RTO (you can pick any in your state), then select a green date on the calendar and pick a time slot.

5

Confirm and download slip

Review your selection, confirm the booking, and download the appointment slip. You will need this at the RTO.

For DL slots: The portal will also show your LL number, validity, and vehicle class before letting you pick a date. Verify these are correct before proceeding.

Best Time to Book Slots

Slots fill up fast, especially at busy RTOs. Here are the best windows to check:

Early Morning

7 – 10 AM

Best chance. Most RTOs release fresh slots here.

Late Evening

7 – 10 PM

Some states release a second batch in the evening.

Sunday Nights

Hidden Gems

Cancelled Monday slots often free up over the weekend.

Slots are usually opened for the next 30 days only. If your preferred RTO is consistently full, try a different RTO in your state. Avoid checking between 11 AM and 2 PM when the portal gets the heaviest traffic.

Reschedule or Cancel Your Slot

If your plans change, you can reschedule or cancel through the same Sarathi portal under the Appointments menu.

Reschedule

Enter your application number and DOB, click "Reschedule", pick a new date, and download the updated slip.

Cancel

Same process, but select "Cancel" instead. The slot booking fee is generally non-refundable after cancellation.

Most states allow a maximum of 2 reschedules or cancellations per application. After that, you may need to submit a fresh application and pay fees again.

Common Errors and Fixes

The Sarathi portal can be unreliable at times. Here are the most common issues and how to resolve them:

"Slots are not defined, please contact RTO"

Your RTO has not released slots yet. Check back the next morning or contact your RTO directly.

"Technical issue, slot booking not allowed"

Server-side issue. Clear your browser cache, try incognito mode, or wait a few hours.

No green dates on the calendar

All slots are booked. Try early morning (7 to 10 AM) or pick a different RTO in your state.

Portal keeps timing out

Avoid peak hours (11 AM to 2 PM). Wait 10 to 20 seconds between attempts. Try a different browser.

Test Day Checklist

Make sure you have the following when you head to the RTO. Missing a document can mean a wasted trip.

For Both LL & DL Test

Printed appointment slip from Sarathi
Age proof (Aadhaar, PAN, or birth certificate)
Address proof (original + photocopy)
Passport-size photographs (2 to 3 copies)
Application fee receipt

Additional for DL Test Only

Learner's Licence (original)
Medical certificate (Form 1A)
Vehicle for driving test
Vehicle RC and valid insurance

Arrive at the RTO at least 30 minutes before your scheduled slot. Late arrivals may lose their appointment and have to rebook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book a slot without completing the application?
No. The slot booking option only becomes available after your LL or DL application is submitted and the fee is paid on the Sarathi portal.
Can I choose any RTO in my state?
Yes. You are not limited to the RTO closest to your address. You can select any RTO within your state that has available slots.
What happens if I miss my appointment?
You will need to book a new slot. If you have already used your reschedule attempts (usually 2), you may need to submit a fresh application.
What if slots have not been available for weeks?
This usually means your RTO is overloaded. Try a different RTO in your state, check early morning daily, or visit your RTO in person for guidance.
