Amounts vary by state

States set their own amounts. The 2019 Act fixed central penalties, but many states have notified different figures. Treat the amounts below as a national reference and verify your state's current rate.

The Harshest Penalty: A Minor Driving

The single toughest provision in the Act applies when a minor is caught driving. It is worth knowing because the consequences fall on the adult owner or guardian, not just the child.

A fine of ₹25,000 along with imprisonment of up to three years
The guardian or vehicle owner is held responsible
The vehicle registration is cancelled for a period
The minor is not granted a licence until the age of 25

Under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these fines the same in every state?
No. The 2019 Act set central penalties, but road transport is a shared subject and states can notify their own amounts. Several states charge more or less than these figures, so always confirm your local rate.
Do fines increase for repeat offences?
Often, yes. Many sections specify a higher penalty for a second or subsequent offence, for example driving without insurance or driving an unregistered vehicle. Some serious offences also add imprisonment. Where this applies, the repeat amount is shown on the card.
Can I lose my driving licence over a traffic fine?
Yes. Certain offences carry a licence disqualification on top of the fine, such as riding without a helmet or triple riding, which can disqualify your licence for three months. Drunk and dangerous driving can lead to longer suspension.
What does the section number mean?
It is the section of the Motor Vehicles Act under which the violation is penalised, for example Section 185 for drunk driving. It is useful if you want to look up the exact legal provision.
How do I pay a fine once it is issued?
Pay it online on the official e-Challan portal. See our guide on how to check and pay an e-challan for the step-by-step process.

Have a fine to clear?

Check for any pending challans against your vehicle and pay them online before they grow or go to court.
