When You Should Check

There are several situations where looking up vehicle details by registration number is useful:

Buying a used vehicle

Verify the seller is the registered owner, check if the vehicle is on loan (hypothecation), and confirm insurance and fitness validity before paying.

After an accident

Note down the other vehicle's number plate to look up the owner and insurance details for filing a claim or police complaint.

Checking your own records

Confirm that your RC, insurance, and fitness details are up to date in the central database, especially after a renewal or transfer.

Traffic police check

If you forgot your physical documents, the digital RC on mParivahan or DigiLocker can be verified by police using the Vahan database.

What Details Are Shown

When you search a vehicle by its registration number on the Vahan portal, the following information is displayed:

Detail What You See
Owner name Partially masked for privacy (e.g., "R***H K***R")
Vehicle details Make, model, fuel type, vehicle class, colour
Registration Registration date, RC expiry date, issuing RTO
Insurance Insurer name and policy expiry date
Fitness Fitness certificate expiry (for commercial vehicles)
Hypothecation Financier name if the vehicle is on a loan

Buying a used vehicle? Always check for hypothecation (loan status) and verify that the insurance is active. If the vehicle shows a financier's name, the loan must be cleared and Form 35 filed before ownership can be transferred.

Check on the Vahan Portal

The Vahan portal is the official government platform for vehicle records. It is free to use and available 24/7.

1

Visit the Vahan portal

Go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in and click on "Know Your Vehicle Details" under Informational Services.

2

Log in or register

Enter your mobile number and verify with OTP. First-time users need to create an account with their mobile number and email.

3

Enter the vehicle registration number

Type the full registration number (e.g., UP53AB1234) and fill in the captcha code.

4

Click "Search Vehicle"

The portal will display the owner name (partially masked), vehicle details, registration dates, insurance status, fitness validity, and loan information.

Works for any state. You can check details of any vehicle registered in India regardless of which state it belongs to. The Vahan database is a national register maintained by MoRTH.

Other Ways to Check

Besides the Vahan portal, you can look up vehicle details through these methods:

mParivahan app

Download the app, go to "RC Search" under Informational Services, and enter the registration number. Shows the same details as the Vahan portal.

SMS

Type VAHAN <registration number> and send it to 07738299899. You will receive the owner's name and basic vehicle info via SMS.

Visit the RTO

Go to the RTO enquiry counter with the vehicle number and your ID proof. Staff can look up full details from the Vahan database, including unmasked owner information.

Privacy and Limitations

The Vahan portal is designed to balance transparency with privacy. Here is what to keep in mind:

Owner name is partially masked

The portal shows only a few characters of the owner's name (e.g., "R***H"). Full details are not available online to prevent misuse.

No address or mobile number

Sensitive personal details like home address, phone number, and Aadhaar number are never shown on the portal.

Use only official portals

Always use parivahan.gov.in or the official mParivahan app. Do not enter your details on third-party websites that mimic the government portal.

Data may take time to update

After a transfer, renewal, or insurance change, it can take 15 to 30 days for the updated details to reflect on the portal.

Beware of fake websites. Several unofficial websites copy the look of the Parivahan portal. Only use vahan.parivahan.gov.in or the mParivahan app from official app stores.
