How to Download Your Driving Licence Online in India

You can download a digital copy of your driving licence for free using the Parivahan portal, DigiLocker, or the mParivahan app. The digital DL is legally valid and accepted by traffic police across India.

Method 1: Download from the Parivahan Portal

The Sarathi Parivahan portal is the official government website for driving licence services. You can download a PDF copy of your DL if you have your application number.

Visit the Parivahan website

Go to parivahan.gov.in, click "Online Services", then select "Driving Licence Related Services" and choose your state.

Open the Print DL page

On the Sarathi dashboard, click "Print Driving Licence" under the Driving Licence section.

Enter your details and download

Type your DL application number and date of birth, fill in the captcha, and click Submit. Your licence will appear on screen. Click "Print DL" to save the PDF.

Note: The Parivahan portal works best for recently issued licences. If your DL was issued before the records were digitised, it may not appear here. Try DigiLocker or mParivahan instead.

Method 2: Download from DigiLocker

DigiLocker is a secure cloud platform by the Ministry of Electronics and IT. It pulls your DL directly from the MoRTH database and stores it in your account permanently. This is the recommended method for most people.

Open DigiLocker and log in

Visit digilocker.gov.in or download the app. Sign in with your mobile number and OTP. New users need to register using their Aadhaar number.

Search for Driving Licence

Tap "Search Documents", type "Driving Licence", and select the option under Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Fetch and save your DL

Enter your driving licence number (your name and DOB are auto-filled from Aadhaar) and tap "Get Document". Your DL will be saved under "Issued Documents" and can be downloaded as a PDF anytime.

Recommended method. Once saved, your DL stays in DigiLocker permanently. The digital copy includes a QR code that traffic police can scan for instant verification.

Method 3: Download from the mParivahan App

mParivahan is the official app by MoRTH. Instead of a PDF, it creates a virtual DL card inside the app with a dynamic QR code that connects to the live government database when scanned.

Install and register

Download mParivahan from the Play Store or App Store. Register with your mobile number and verify with OTP.

Add your driving licence

Tap "Driving Licence" on the home screen. Enter your DL number and date of birth, then tap "Add My Driving Licence".

Access your virtual DL

The app pulls your details from the central database and displays a virtual DL card with your photo, vehicle class, validity, and QR code. Access it anytime from the "My DL" section.

Common Issues and How to Fix Them

DL not showing on DigiLocker

Usually caused by a name or DOB mismatch between your Aadhaar and DL record. Contact your local RTO to get the details corrected.

Recently issued DL not appearing

New licences can take 1 to 2 weeks to appear in the central database. Wait a few days and try again.

OTP not received

Ensure the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar or DL record is active. Try again after a few minutes if the network is busy.

Parivahan portal showing error

The portal can be slow during peak hours. Try early morning or late night. Double-check that you are entering the correct application number format.

Is there any fee to download my driving licence online?
No. Downloading your DL through the Parivahan portal, DigiLocker, or mParivahan is completely free.
Is the digital driving licence legally valid?
Yes. MoRTH has issued official circulars directing traffic police across India to accept digital documents from DigiLocker and mParivahan as equivalent to the original. A photo of your DL saved in your phone gallery is not valid. It must be accessed through an official app.
Will the digital DL work without internet?
If you have downloaded the PDF from DigiLocker or Parivahan, you can show it offline. The mParivahan virtual DL also works offline once loaded, though QR code verification by police requires internet on their end.
Can I download my DL without knowing the DL number?
On the Parivahan portal, you can search using your application number instead. You can also find your DL number on the Sarathi website under "Search Application" by entering your mobile number and date of birth.
